diy: denim skirt flip

Hey y’all! Sorry I haven’t been posting a ton this week. I’ve been spending most of my last few days of no-school-time finally working on my clothing line!! In case you're new to the blog (welcome, btw to all you newly subscribed girls from the giveaway!!!😊❤️💛), then I’ll explain a little. Basically the reason I started this blog was because I want to eventually be a fashion designer and have my own brand and clothing line, so I thought a good way to get my ideas out to the world and girls like you would to post them on here! So I’ve been sketching ideas since I was probably 10 (although my style has most definitely changed since then 😳), but just these past few days I decided to actually work on getting a portfolio/collection drawn out. So I’ve been scouring Pinterest and the internet, saving pics of ideas and patterns and styles, then drawing all that out based on what I have in my mind! I’m only about halfway done but I'm hoping in the next two weeks it will be finished. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it once I’m done, since I don’t have a company to produce the designs yet (if any of you ever hear about an opportunity like that, let me know 😂🤣), but I am excited that you girls are excited about this too! From some of the sneak peeks I’ve posted, I’ve had quite a few of you DM me already asking me where you can buy them, how much it will cost, and giving me ideas for things you would like to see in the line! But anyways, I guess we’ll just see what happens once I’m done :) and if y’all would like me to post the collection when I’m finished, let me know!

Ok but anyways, getting onto the actual post! I wasnt really having a ton of ideas of what to write for the blog, but yesterday my mom asked if I wanted an old skirt that she didn’t want anymore. (I’ll insert pics here)

So I tried it on and the skirt fit great (it worked really well as a high waisted skirt, which is so hard for me to find) but the length and slight flare at the end definitely reminded me of a pioneer, which wasn’t exactly the look I was going for ;) So I decided to make it shorter and it turned out really cute! I’ll post pics of that in a bit, but first I thought I’d quickly explain what I did so that if you ever find an outdated skirt or something that's not your style at the thrift store, you can see how easy it is to make it look cute and trendy!

So basically, I tried the skirt on and made a mark (you can use chalk or a washable fabric marker) at the length I wanted to cut it. Something really important to remember when doing this is you can always cut more, but you can’t undo what you cut!! So I definitely recommend cutting in small increments and doing less than you think, because it usually ends up being more than you expect.

After I marked it while wearing it, I took it off and measured the mark from the bottom of the skirt...

...that way I could make sure I was cutting it evenly all around. So once I knew I wanted about 8 inches off, I went all around the skirt and made marks every few inches so I would know where to cut.

Then, I cut it! Make sure you don’t cut through the front and back at once though. The back ends up fitting shorter than the front, so you want to make sure everything is even.

After I did that all around, I tried it on again. I did decide to cut off another inch, but after doing that, I was done!

And then also, on this one I decided to distress it. I didn’t take pics, but basically you just go around the bottom hem with tweezers and pull the white threads. (You can also put it in the wash and that gives an even more distressed look. I’m going to do that with this one soon probably)

But yeah, that’s basically it! It ended up looking like this, and I think it’s pretty cute and it’ll be a good skirt to wear to church.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and got inspired to try your own thrift/clothes flip sometime! It’s super fun to see how you can recreate something, and I’m looking forward to going thrifting sometime soon so I can get a bunch more items to fix up (and post on here!).

Don't forget to like this post and comment if you enjoyed it! It always makes my day 😊🌻🌞💛
